Life's Too Short. Keep Them Heads Banging!

The British Medical Journal's, "Head and neck injury risks in heavy metal: head bangers stuck between rock and a hard bass" (VIA Boing Boing) details some scary news for all the head bangers out there.
Apparently mild traumatic brain and neck injury can easily occur if our range of motion is than 75°. Whether it's heavy metal or dubstep, the average BPM is around 140. These are the highertempos that pose the greatest risk.
So unless we start bringing protractors to all of our parties, the great alternative solution is to listen to more "adult oriented rock." They even give us some brilliant examples like "Michael Bolton, Celine Dion, Enya and Richard Clayderman." It goes on to suggest that we should "only head bang to every second beat, or use personal protective equipment." Ya that sounds okay. Anyone got some links on neck braces for my next concert? This stumble was far too funny to pass up. Just imagine people dancing with some sort of head gear or only banging to every other song or beat?

Only in England could something this magical happen...

Back in July 13th, 2002 Fatboy Slim held this free public ~~rave~~ party, expecting about 60,000 people to attend. 250,000 managed to show up for this wee gathering, covering up Brighton's entire beach front.

Resident Advisor has a great feature up on DEMF up right now just in time for their 10th anniversary next weekend. You'll finally get an inside look at the festival from those who know it best. "Artists, promoters, city officials, journalists, more than 50 in all, presenting an oral history of Detroit's electronic music festival." A must read for all you music heads.

BBE Music's 5th compilation, "Get Down With The Philly Sound" compiled and mixed by Dimitri From Paris features the birth of disco in Philadelphia all nicely fit into a 2CD box set with a 6 panel digipack.

NOW for all your music history needs, I would suggest heading over to DJ History. Be sure to browse their Archives Section. My last read was a nice conversation with Guru & Run-DMC way back in 1993.

Ruth Fu**ing Flowers!

At the ripe age of 69, Ruth Flowers aka DJ Mamy Rock is tearing up the European club circuit at the moment.

It seemed like a joke at first, but i guess it ain't hard to tell a bunch of people would jump onto her quickly. Her obvious physical characteristics have made it an easy sell for club promoters and record labels looking for something different. Not cutting her up or anything but I just can't imagine herself doing all the producing, even if she does have a musical background as a singer.

Flowers will be releasing her first single sometime this spring so be sure to check out her website for more information and her upcoming tour dates. It even appears that she'll be touring across North America in the near future.

Philly's hottest DJ & producer, Diplo (owner of Mad Decent Records, one half of Major Lazer) has another new project in the works.
"No One's Safe" is a new series documenting some of the lesser known musical subcultures, you may be unfamiliar with.
I admire everything Diplo does with his rising status. His fans are now witnessing some international scenes that never get the attention they actually deserve. I just wish more popular artists had the same attitude has he does. By teaching the rest of the world something new like this... ideas spark and those intricate, indescribable music styles will continue to expand.

This pilot episode below entitled, "Nola Bounce" showcases the New Orleans bounce genre which includes some footage on Sissy Nobby and Big Freedia.

First off, let me just start by saying this is the first full blown funk show I've ever been to (other than the soul man, Mayer Hawthorne's last month).
The Main Thing are a local funk group in T.O. bringing back the passion of the golden years. The 7 piece band along with their pals came to the Wrongbar and played only what they promised... straight vintage soul n' funk!

They played and we danced.

Simple as that. If your looking for just a solid Dance Party, no mess, no fuss SuperSoulSound Funk Revue is your friend. Everybody was boogieing down in their own way. I was even more pleased to see some break dancers mixed within the diverse crowd that night.
DJ General Eclectic also delivered the goods playing the classics your all familiar with thanks to the samples of your favourite Hip-Hop songs. He played straight wax and cut some of best originals you may of heard from Janet Jackson, KRS-One, A Tribe Called Quest, Wu-Tang Clan, Kanye West samples.

Correct me if I'm wrong here, but cats are the most popular animals on the web. I mean just check this video and try to say otherwise. They run shit!

According to BoingBoing's "Everything you must know about Standing Cat", French internet culture journalist Aude Baron has the story behind this little guy,

The cat's name is Rocky. He is 2 years old and his owners are French (Daisy and Yann). Rocky used to stand up because he couldn't see the birds through the windows, and wanted to, so he stood up. Why does he raise his leg in the middle of the video? Probably because there was a bird outside, according to Daisy, or maybe a dog wandering around. Rocky hates dogs. He doesn't stand up too often any more because Daisy and Yann moved their stuff, so now Rocky can see everything without having to go bipedal. He's also able to sit on his bottom like a human (this cat is crazy). Basically, that's it :-)

So theirs Rocky's 15 minutes of fame.

Just your average High School kid with a not-so average comm tech project. Check out this young musician and filmmaker, Ben Meyers (YouTube user, "Hugio55") who sparked my attention with his "Empty School" production.

He clearly made a smart decision using his savings to buy the new Canon 7D as the video really complements his song. It only took him a short month to complete this piece so who knows what else he has in store for us. Some of his other talents include "Browning Pools and Spas".

I'm pretty sure my generation can all agree that Nintendo was a staple throughout our childhoods. Because of such heavy use, it seems like those 8-bit sounds have been embedded deeply into our heads. No matter how bad or outdated they may sound, we still cling to them. That is why I'm proud to introduce to you a local Canadian who goes by the name of Brad Smith (Sakanakao on YouTube) who continues to bring us these sounds, but with a modern approach. Smith is a video game programmer, musician and 8-bit remixer who's done the unthinkable and combined those soothing sounds with the epic Dark Side of the Moon! Not a huge fan of all these remakes but I decided to get with the times and except a few here and there.

It could of been sped up a tab in the beginning but still... magnífico!

REVIEW for @MayerHawthorne & The County's Show @Wrongbar - Sat. March 27th 10'

It all started with Nikki Jean and her band, who set the mood accordingly as the space between you and your neighbours shoulder got closer.
Haven't heard of Nikki Jean before? Maybe this will ring a bell?
However generic this may sound, she reminds me of a young Alica Keys with so much future ahead of her. Such a sweet lady.

Be sure to check Nikki's work on her YouTube channel in the following months as she wraps up her debut album which is almost ready for release. Her band didn't really get the credit they deserved so if any of you folks remember their names let me know as I rolled in half way through the set.

Next up was DJ House Shoes on the ones and twos grabbing the energy and slowly pumping up the increasing crowd. House Shoes spun just about everything. I remember him saying, "Yes, I don't give a fuck! I will play Mos Def after Eurythmics. I'm turning 35 in an hour!" Drunk and all, he made it work and got us ready. Happy Birthday dude!

Next up, the one and only Mayer Hawthorne backed by the County.

With no delay, Hawthorne pops out of the curtains with some sort of mix of James Brown introduction (you know that Star Time thing with the drum roll?) jumping right into Your Easy Lovin' Ain't Pleasin' Nothin'. "Make Her Mine" followed which was nicely mixed into his hit, Maybe So, Maybe No.
You can really tell he is also a DJ and MC with the way he transitions his songs using just the right amount of speech to move the crowd.
Next was "Shiny & New" and "I Wish It Would Rain" before switching it up on the vocals and handing if off to band mate, Topher Moore for his song, "Ruthless" (Download Link HERE). The Marvelettes classic, "Don't Mess With Bill" was then covered marking the half way point approximately. Hawthorne then yells, "Where my ladies at!" followed by the girls going nuts to the ironic "One Track Mind". Without warning, they follow with, "This is for the kids! This is only for the kids!..." N.E.R.D.'s Fly or Die! To give you a feel for how he did it, check out this performance in Houston on March 17th.

Followed by: "Green Eyed Love", a Biz Markie tribute right into "Just Ain't Gonna Work Out", "Love is All Right" and finally "The Ills" to end it off respectively.

With Billboard ranking Mayer Hawthorne & The County as the 4th best show during the S.X.S.W festival this year, his flawless performance came as no surprise this Saturday. He can make you cry, he make you laugh, dance, trip, and reminiscence about everything in between. Ever since my very 1st post, Hawthorne's work has been championed by some of the best.
He called it his best show during this series of tour dates and made sure Toronto was the last one!
Playing at the Wrongbar set the absolute best atmosphere. What other place would you want to hear this new progressive soul movement? ALL YOU Toronto audiophiles are seriously missing out if you haven't heard any live performances here yet.

From start to finish, I give this show a 10/10.

Them Crooked Vultures' are currently working on their second LP and preparing for their summer onslaught of tour dates.

A month before its expected release date, (April 13th 2010) Congratulations has leaked. Don't really understand why so many albums leak all the time. Do the press and or close friends that have the early content just send it out to the internet trolls with a real passion to fuck things up?

No idea, but for MGMT's sack, STREAM the album on their site for the time being.
Pretty impressed with the album overall. Really digging "Lady Dada's Nightmare" instrumental piece and their self-titled track.

Vinyl Record Grooves

Boing Boing is a great site to waste countless hours on the intro-web. Nonetheless, with a little browsing through, you could find some really intriguing articles. This vinyl record groove under an electron microscope, at 1000x magnification is by far the best link I've witnessed so far.

I just spent the past weekend organizing my vinyl collection so finding this was pretty fitting.

I'm unsure about this new albums approach. On their myspace, "Salt In The Wounds" is available for streaming which sounds like their earlier releases but "Self Versus Self" feat In Flames is bound to be a more metal track. However, "Calling" feat. The Prodigy should be a given DnB banger.

Hopefully this album will stick to the Drum & Bass roots as I'm not really feeling the more alternative rock/metal sound. In Silico was a good album but I'd split the tracks in half, compared to Hold Your Colour which was solid all the way through (they could possibly think of making double LP/CD albums with concepts so they can encompass various genres).

If your not familiar with Pendulum, I suggest you go through their discography and get the earlier releases by them. Hold Your Color is a modern classic in my books but check them out and make your own decision.

In anticipation for Hudson Mohawke's trip to my hometown, I decided to promote the piece for Mohawke's latest album and showcase a bit of his work if you haven't heard it yet.
Visual artist Tom Scholefield or better known as Konx-Om-Pax around the web has a new set of melted prints as well as a Bleep Blog article HERE detailing his history with Mohawke.

Ross Birchard AKA Hudson Mohawke, signed to the legendary Warp Records at the young age of 24, is already touring around the world receiving critical acclaim. The young Scottish producer and DJ from Glasgow uses really odd samples to create a glitchy hip-hop sound unlike anything I've heard before. His work stands at par with all the other experimental producers from Warp which puts him at the cream of the crop with years of success to follow.

Can't wait to see him live as that genre defining music will surely take the crowd on a journey.

Sadly I only made it out to one show for this years music fest but oh my, RJD2 ripped it up last Thursday @TheModClub. Just the right selection of songs from his catalogue. His versatility amazed me as I was expecting only a DJ set. He sang and played various guitars supported by another player, drummer and keyboardist.

Céleste Boursier-Mougenot has been commissioned by The Curve, which "is a series of new site-specific commissions" by contemporary artists being hosted at The Barbican Centre in London, England.

French artist Céleste Boursier-Mougenot creates works by drawing on the rhythms of daily life to produce sound in unexpected ways. Boursier-Mougenot’s installation for The Curve, his first solo exhibition in the UK, takes the form of a walk-though aviary for a flock of zebra finches, furnished with electric guitars and other musical instruments. As the birds go about their routine activities, perching on or feeding from the various pieces of equipment, they create a random and captivating soundscape.
Also included in the installation is a series of videos that feature close ups of hands playing electric guitars. However, the sounds that accompany the footage do not emanate from the guitars. Instead we hear an insect-like drone produced by the amplification of the video signal.

Man those birds are pretty talented (especially that one with the stick).

Superstar DJ FAIL!

My least favourite member of the Swedish House Mafia, but still a very talented and appreciated Steve Angello is under a little criticism these days.
It all stems from YouTube user dudullerena's videos of the past Rio Music Conference (see below)

The Swedish House Mafia's forum has this all posted under the title, "Steve Angello Mixing?" surprisingly. The forum members seem be under the same curiosity as I am.
Honestly who can mix without headphones, not touch either pitch controls on their music decks and not adjust their mixer knobs? (If your wondering what he's doing when he is touching the mixer, he's playing around with his effects, not mixing). Right at the 2:12 mark of the clip, an effect is put in and the next track starts to mix in. At this time, Angello has his hands up smiling and looking pretty dozy if you ask me. The next song then re-enters around 3:10 where I still can't understand how it was mixed. Even when Angello explained himself on his Twitter, on Monday March 1st:

For all you ppl out there who wanna know how its done .. Lemme tell u .., dj for 5 hours a day for 10 years. When you have done that .. Start touring , playing 4-6 gigs a week for another 5 years... After that try play on the CDj's. U see the BPM on the right side of the display , u have a pitch and easy way to count the BPM is by looking on the cd u gonna mix in , if 1 bpm is the dif just adjust the pitch to +0.8 or -0.8 depending on if its slower or faster .. After that 0.8 either way is one BPM. So 1.6 is 2 , 2.4 is 3 , 3.20 is 4 and 4 is 5. Ok .. Learn the trax u play and enjoy.

From what I saw, he didn't even play around with the CDj's but he does have a point with the whole experience factor. It must get pretty easy mixing the same tracks continously so who knows.
One other point in the clip which I found hilarious, was his manger in the background. Look on the right hand side around 3:40 (dude in the suit). He looks at Angello and shakes his head with a bit of a "I dunno man..." iffy kind of look shaking his hands and then having a word with him. More funny than straight proof but just take a look at this other clip from the night with some more fabulous mixing! (right around 3:30)

Angello is more successfull than I'll ever be but c'mon, superstar DJs shouldn't slack like this (or at least appear to be). He had to of seen the cameras recording him. Then again who would care if thousands will continue to spend big bucks no matter the case.

Update on Keith "Guru" Elam

Alright, so one million tweets since my last post, here's the current state of his situation to the best of my understanding.
I'm sure you all heard by now that Guru's surgery on March 1st went well and he is expected to have a full recovery. "Sources close to Guru told AllHipHop.com that the rapper is doing “fine” and should make a full recovery, despite chatter on the Internet that the 43-year-old artist had died." (fools on Twitter spreading false news like usual). It then goes on to say that "Guru's partner DJ Premier also confirmed the news on his official Twitter page."
One thing to understand here is that, the Twitter page they are speaking about (@DJPremierBlog) is not Premo's but a loyal fan of his named 'gimantalonot' from Belgium
(Most official twitter accounts of celebrities and such are becoming Verified Accounts slowly which help these situations and stops confusion).

'gimantalon' still seems to be one of the most reliable sources and hasn't really done any harm in any case. He has in fact brought some new insight to the situation as he posted a video by Guru's nephew, Justin Nicholas-Elam Ruff, Twitter @JustinNElamRuff (See Below)

This video simply shows that Guru's musical partner, "Super Producer Solar" is a bit sketchy and somethings definitely wrong here.

I feel bad for Guru's nephew who is trying his best to be granted access to something one should never have to ask for, and that's the right to know about your own damm family! I will never understand the American Health Care System and how Solar can have so much control being his Health Care Agent but in any case...

Solar, along with Yo-PR are going to have some real explaining to do once this all settles.

After all this confusion and debate, Guru's no rookie to rumours. Whether it be with Premo or the present Solar, its besides the point.
If Guru wants to clear it all up with us, he will do so when he gets better. If he doesn't, then he doesn't.
Forget about all the behind the scenes bullshit.
I just hope we can all wish him the best because no matter what he's like or what the others are like around him, his music is whats important to us and that can never be ruined. He is respected and adored by the entire Hip-Hop community and always will be. His skills are flawless and that's all that really counts.

7 more days till the Gorillaz' release their brand new album Plastic Beach (March 8th but the 9th in North America). With their first single, Stylo's warm welcome, and the albums rave reviews, it looks like another huge rotation for the UK band. With the first video up yesterday, the continuing story looks like an interesting one (I mean you can never go wrong with Bruce Willis).
