After I read an Interview with DJ Tiësto and the A.V. Club, I felt entitled to make a post about it.
The A.V. Club asks,
What are your limitations when you travel? Do you limit the vinyl?
Tiësto: “I have a lot of records with me, no vinyl though.”
Is that a matter of convenience?
Tiësto: “It’s not a matter of convenience, it’s just that vinyl is so outdated nowadays. I can make a track in my hotel room today, and play it for the crowd tomorrow. That never happens with vinyl. I played a lot of acetates at the end of my vinyl period—I used to make tracks and get them pressed in four or five days—but the quality was always so bad and they would skip all the time. The vinyl days for me are over. I still buy vinyl, but only albums, and just to play. For DJing, vinyl is a nightmare.”
Tiësto, I understand you to a certain degree. Digitally formatted music is much more convenient for everyone especially when producing. Getting your music pressed does take some time but the quality isn't "always so bad." If anything the sound quality from vinyl is better. Maybe not for a Trance musician like yourself but for others, this format is preferred.
Again "...For DJing, vinyl is a nightmare." Nightmare! I strongly believe vinyl will be around forever and as long as long as Hip-Hop, Soul, Funk, and Jazz DJs are around, vinyl will be around. I think you'll begin to see clubs creep in on the mainstream that only allow vinyl DJs. The history behind DJ's and vinyl is deeply entrenched within the roots of Hip Hop for example. For myself, I can tell when scratching is done digitally. The only way to get that dirty scratch sample is the traditional method, and thats digging up some records.
DJ Tiesto, I love your music and will continue to do so. I understand that vinyl may be outdated for you and many other electronic DJs, but not for us all. I’m building up a larger collection because I love it so much.
The best DJs are those that take the best of both worlds realizing the positives of vinyl and digital music.
BY THE WAY
